Real Estate Licensing Requirements -- General Information

Each state requires all real estate professionals to be licensed. Although laws may vary from state to state, the basic information remains the same.

Michigan Real Estate Licensing Requirements

Each applicant for a real estate salesperson license in the state of Michigan must be 18 years of age and have successfully completed state required education and examination requirements. Other requirements include, being of "good moral character", and a current letter of good standing from states in which the applicant currently holds, or has ever held, a real estate license.

Applicants for a salesperson license shall complete an approved course of at least 40 clock hours of real estate fundamentals prior to taking the state examination. The course must consist of not less than 40 clock hours of classroom instruction in fundamentals of real estate, including four clock hours of civil rights law and equal opportunity in housing.

Broker applicants shall complete 90 hours of approved course work, including nine hours of civil rights law and equal opportunity in housing. The 90 hours are in addition to any hours required to obtain a salesperson license. A law degree automatically earns 60 clock hours and six hours of civil rights law and equal opportunity in housing

In order to obtain a broker license, an applicant must show proof of three years of full-time experience as a salesperson, or its equivalent, in relevant, related experience. Related experience could be as a licensed builder, land developer or property manager, a loan or trust officer at a bank, mortgage company or title company, as an attorney, or as an appraiser.

Michigan licensees are required to complete eighteen clock hours of approved continuing education during each three-year renewal period from a Michigan approved educational institution, a minimum two hours of approved legal update are required each year.

Course Policies

Pass/fail grading system:
 Any student that fulfills the course requirements will receive a pass grade for the course and will be reported to the state for credit in that course. Any student not fulfilling all requirements of any given course will receive a fail grade for the course and will not receive credit until all requirements are fulfilled according to the make-up policy.
Verification of attendance:
 Each student must sign-in at the beginning of any class and show ID at this time. Instructors monitor attendance during classes by doing random head counts and observing students. After lunch breaks and other longer breaks, students are required to sign-in again.
Tuition refund:
 Any student canceling prior to the day of class (or first class session) will receive a full refund. Students who cancel the day of class or do not attend will not be eligible for a refund. Tuition for classes canceled by Professional Learning Network will be refunded to the students.
Make-up policy:
 Attendance at all sessions is REQUIRED. Missed classes or any missed portion of a session must be made up in order to be eligible for credit. Missed sessions can be made up by attending the same session in the next class offered.
Certificate distribution:
 Photo identification is required at the beginning of the course. Certificates are distributed upon verification of completion via email or us postal service.
Student content:
 Students dismissed from the class for inappropriate/disruptive behavior will not receive a refund or credit. Students dismissed will have to retake an entire class to receive credit.
Course materials:
 All materials/tools needed for any PLN course will be provided by PLN.
