Real Estate Licensing Requirements -- General Information

Each state requires all real estate professionals to be licensed. Although laws may vary from state to state, the basic information remains the same.

Michigan Real Estate Licensing Requirements

Each applicant for a real estate salesperson license in the state of Michigan must be 18 years of age and have successfully completed state required education and examination requirements. Other requirements include, being of "good moral character", and a current letter of good standing from states in which the applicant currently holds, or has ever held, a real estate license.

Applicants for a salesperson license shall complete an approved course of at least 40 clock hours of real estate fundamentals prior to taking the state examination. The course must consist of not less than 40 clock hours of classroom instruction in fundamentals of real estate, including four clock hours of civil rights law and equal opportunity in housing.

Broker applicants shall complete 90 hours of approved course work, including nine hours of civil rights law and equal opportunity in housing. The 90 hours are in addition to any hours required to obtain a salesperson license. A law degree automatically earns 60 clock hours and six hours of civil rights law and equal opportunity in housing

In order to obtain a broker license, an applicant must show proof of three years of full-time experience as a salesperson, or its equivalent, in relevant, related experience. Related experience could be as a licensed builder, land developer or property manager, a loan or trust officer at a bank, mortgage company or title company, as an attorney, or as an appraiser.

Michigan residents with a valid sales license are required to complete six clock hours of approved continuing education each annual renewal period from a Michigan approved educational institution.
